"The stories before you are moments in reflection of a time and place now fast fading. They are a view through my eyes of the southern coastal life that I grew up surrounded by and still reside in. Scattered throughout are offered shares of that fading dialect, the salty wit and 'cracked pepper' insights of those colorful barrier island dwellers. You will find most all to be mixed with a dose of some 'gone fishin' humor.
What does it all mean? Find yourself some oak tree shade, a light sweet breeze and an old cotton rope hammock, the rest will take care of itself."
Excerpt from "Malidies By March" , one of the stories in GOING COASTAL:
"On our little island, Aunt Linnie was the one that everybody went to for advice on remedyin' what ailed them or their's. In her time she was said to mend everything from bones to broken hearts. Her momma, who taught her, back in long ago years was said to have even sawed off a leg or two. One, it was whispered, from her first husband, Jeb, who tried to run off with a gal from Bluffton. The story goes that though he repledged his undyin' love for her, Jeb did not survive the healin' process.
Illustration from story, "February;Remember?"
Excerpt from "Surly Jake", another story found in Jim's book, GOING COASTAL:
"Now Jake was not a tall man, but what he lacked in height, he made up for in sturdy thickness. He had a head of black hair, peppered with gray, that stuck up in places like a kingfisher's topknot. Dark eyes hung back under darker eyebrows. A big mustache balanced on the other end of a prominent nose. Like most of the guys on the crew, he had a bit of a gut that lapped over his belt. Jake wore it like a business man's tie."
of the lowcountry, Stumblin' Jimmy shares adventures from his life that include many colorful characters. With stories both humorous and poignant, his tales have such wit and drip with so much southern charm that he has been called the twentieth century Mark Twain.
A high quality paperback book, GOING COASTAL is 116 pages, containing 44 original stories and 42 illustrations, including three photographs. GOING COASTAL was published by Sea Oats Publishing in January of 2008.
